"Visiting the area reminded me of my own childhood adventures, it was great to explore the outdoors and finish the day at the pub"

GREAT SIGHTS TO VISIT

THE ROACHES

315-326 million years old

The area surrounding the pub is rich in natural beauty, if you like sightseeing and the great outdoors then this is the place for you.

Popular with Tourists, Walkers, Hikers, Rock Climbers and Mountain Bikers alike all year round with many people returning to the area year in year out.

You can park for free and walk (cycle) from our pub down through the village and up to the foot of the Roaches inside of 20 minutes on foot. While you can park at the foot of the Roaches, free on-road parking is limited. Please don't park on the grass under any circumstances as this can block emergency access during busy periods and you will get ticketed by marshals.

The views from the top of the Roaches are nothing short of stunning, on a clear sunny day you can see Liverpool Docks, Jodrell Bank Observatory, Tittesworth reservoir besides vast parts of rolling Staffordshire and Cheshire countryside.

Advice: we advise taking a weatherproof/ windproof mac if you have one as it can be windy at the top given its exposure. A good pair of walking boots are essential given the uneven nature of the landscape!

POOLE'S CAVE

This Limestone Cavern much like the Roaches is millions of years old with weird crystal stalactite formations throughout. Entry is by ticket only via the visitors centre and includes a 20 minute guided tour. Trivia: Poole's Cave is linked to "Titan" which is Britain's deepest shaft at over 464ft deep. The total cave system length is believed to extend 11 miles.

Advice:  The cave stays at a constant 7*c temperate all year round, we would advise taking a thin thermal jumper even in the summer months. A good pair of walking boots is essential.

CHROME HILL

Chrome hill is a limestone reef knoll located near the village of Hollinsclough, truly a stunning rock formation and sight to behold, you can walk the ridge just ensure you have good boots on your feet. Dare you walk the Dragons Back?

Advice: An all weather mac and good condition hiking boots are a must! Not advisable to walk the ridge in wet and slippery conditions.

LUD'S CHURCH

Lud's Church is a deep chasm penetrating the Millstone Grit bedrock created by a massive landslip on the hillside above Gradbach and is nearly 60ft deep. Even on the hottest of days it stays cool. You can take some amazing photographs around here, no wonder people love it so much. Historically Lud's Church was used as a secret place of worship by John Wycliffe and other Lollards during and around the period of the reformation in the 15th Century.

Advice:  A think fleece is advisable during the summer and weatherproof mac during the winter. Good quality walking boots are essential.
